Eleven dead in fire at Schiphol airport

Amsterdam - Eleven persons were killed in a fire which broke out in detention cells at Amsterdam's international Schiphol airport early Thursday.

Several persons were injured in the blaze, a spokesman for the Dutch justice ministry told the ANP news agency.

The fire broke out shortly after midnight for as yet undeterminied reasons, officials said.

The detention facility at the airport holds upwards of 350 persons being held for suspected crimes, or because their entry into the Netherlands had been blocked or were about to be deported from the country.

The section where the fire broke out was holding 43 detainees, a number of whom were evacuated, officials said.

It took firefighters about three hours to get the blaze under control.

Afterwards, a number of the evacuated detainees were returned to their cells. Police helicopters went on the search for possible escapees, but officials believed that nobody was able to escape during the fire
